The CarverMuseumATX is requesting proposals for our upcoming Small Black Museum Residency Project. The Carver residency project is a three month residency for three artists to develop new artwork and engage in professional development initiatives offered through the program. The residency will take place remotely between February 2021 and May 2021. Artists who successfully complete the residency will be eligible to participate in a survey, group, or solo exhibition.

About the Carver Museum:

Through the preservation and exhibition of African American material culture, history, and aesthetic expression-the Carver Museum works to create a space where the global contributions of all black people are celebrated. We accomplish this by telling stories about our local community and connecting those histories to larger narratives about blackness.

The Mission of the Residency:

2021 marks the launch of the Small Black Museum Residency Project. The mission of this residency program is to support and promote both established and emerging artists of African descent who are largely underrepresented in institutions. Often times, artists of color  in particular creatives of African descent, lack access to financial and institutional resources that would allow them to advance their professional careers. This program is ideal for artists who have a progressive approach to both content and form and whose work reflects shifting paradigms around race, identity, nation, and place.

The Small Black Museum Residency Project will benefit artists who have a steady studio practice and who are capable of producing a new collection of work within the residency period.
